Altars are great way to connect with the Source. Could be an elaborate one, or just a candle and the right kind of music for the ocassion, or a ouija board and a candle, for me the essential is the candle. black or red my prefference.

I think that altars are extremely important. for one that is where almost all of the magick work takes place, and second they are great ways to make you feel safe or comfortable. I know I always get a calm feeling when Im next to my Ahriman altar.
