Are there any Satanic Lawyers on this site? I have a question about custody issues, as I'm a Satanist. I hate to even SAY this, as I don't feel I should need to defend my belief system, but it's looking like I may have too. The topic I'm curious about would be, "family law." If there is anyone who could give some insight, or better yet, Case Law examples, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the volumes of information. I did in fact already know that the First Amendment protects the rights you mentioned. Thing is, the court we will be going to is in, of all places, UTAH. I'm sure you know what that means. To answer some of your questions, no I'm not a druggie, that is his mother's occupation. (Welfair whore/drug addict, to be specific.) No, I have NEVER killed anything, I don't believe in that either. Currently looking for work as I had been taking care of my elderly Grandmother for the last 5 years. My son is 14, and the reason I think it would be in his best interest to be here...well there is a list. He was failing out of school there, came here for a time to live with his grandparents and grades went up to A's and B's. His education is my primary concern at this time, and I don't think he needs to be around his mother who tried to "kill" herself in front of him. (Attention seeking behavior.)
I hope that give you some insight.

Remember too there is the ACLU. I would in addition to what dragonwitch has said I would go to a law library it you have one where you live an look up stuff on your own. There is usely someone there that can point you in the right direction. It has been a long time since I have been involved in this but I will look there are some places I used to know of. It may take a little since I am now on the east coast an have almost forgotten even most the people I used to know. But if you do the research an bring it to your attorney that sometimes is a big help as well. But my hands to you for caring enough. I was raised by a mother that should never had been one. I was 12 when I found out about my real father an 15 when I went an found him.

I wish we did have a law library here, but sadly we do not. There may be a section at the public library I can look into, but my time of studying law in college was a long time ago. This is a good suggestion, one I had not thought of yet. Thank you for your input!

Yes, it has to do with getting custody of my 14 year old son. As this post was started a while ago, things have progressed, and he is now in foster care, looking at being placed up for adoption. I really do not want to see that happen, as he could certainly live here, focus on school, and have oppertunities way beyond what is being offered to him there. His so called 'mother' and I use that term quite loosely, has painted me as the father of satan himself, to the courts. Yet, she's the one who has had 6 kids by 5 different guys, lives off welfair so she doesn't have to work, is a drug addict, and to top it off, attempted to 'kill' herself in front of two of her kids. No wonder the kids were taken away.
So, at this point I'm trying to do what I can to make it an option for him to be able to come live here, if he so chooses. I believe he would MUCH rather be here, than adopted out. Sadly, due to his mother's bringing up my beliefs, has thrown a bit of a bump on this road. But she's SO out there. I have been accuesed of sharpening my teeth, believing I'm a Vampire, drinking blood, involved with voodoo, and supposedly taught the child "Satanic Chants." WTF?? Ya, she's a nut case. Yet I have chosen to step up and defend myself, time and again. It just doesn't seem right.

The best thing you can ever do is to get yourself set up in a stable life, make sure you have you have a secure home, a regular income and that your life style is responsable and above bourd.

In the end of the day anyone looking in should see you as a stable responsable adult that can provivde the care and safety that the child needs.

Once you have all this then the rest is down to the law. But its the best way to ensure success, also avoid conflict with those involved, show patience and reasoning skills, even when others dont.

And to reply to this note, I have done just that. I have my own house, no payments. I have a good job, and my lifestyle is simply working and being here to sleep, so I can go back to work.
I have no problem with providing a safe environment for him, and I'm VERY much about being responsible, yet my work requires odd shifts, so I'm concerned about him being left alone too long.
I have NO contact with the others who are involved, they live a state away, and I know for a fact they are mentally unstable individuals.
I don't know, I'm doing my best here to provide a good home, as this is the house in which I grew up in, and I didn't turn out all that bad, at least I finished college and have a degree. It is my hope that he would be able to do the same, and mayhap even more, in this environment. Where he's been is NOT conducive to learning, but rather downplays education. I have issues with this. I'm in the process of writing a letter to the courts there, to enlighten them, about my expectations for him. So we shall see where that goes.
